On a stock 6 volt system, is the top connector on the solinoid the correct place to connect the wire for the lighter?

I think that is the connector from the starter switch.

You could connect to the post where the cable from the battery connects. The ammeter will not read the current going to the cigar lighter.

The wiring instructions I received states to connect the lighter wire to the top of the starter. That would mean both the battery wire & the lighter wire would be on the same hot post. The photo is from before the wiring was re-done. There was no lighter wire connected to the solinoid.

Rusty is correct.

If you are going to run the lighter wire down to the starter, the left of the 2 larger posts on your solenoid in your picture (with the large battery cable attached) is where you want to go.

However...
I can see absolutely no reason not to just hook to the battery side of the ammeter under the dash.
That's just the other end of the exact wire running from the exact same place we just pointed you to on the solenoid.
And every lighter I've dealt with attaches that way.
Why run another wire through the firewall when it goes to and accomplishes the same thing as a wire that's already there?

Hope this saves you some work and wire. :-)

I did some digging in my literature as well as online. According to the wiring instructions provided by Y N Z wiring, the lighter wire goes to the top terminal on the starter (I think they mean the solinoid). That is correct for 1951 BUT not 1950. This connection is also in the 1951 Accessories Manual posted online by Keith Hardy. I found my 1950 Chevrolet Accessories Installation Manual and the book states "to attach lamp socket wire to the tail lamp terminal on the junction block, and wire from lighter to battery terminal on junction block as shown in figure 1." Unfortunately, figure 1 is of very poor quality I cannot make out any useable information. BUT, in the Natiuonal Chevy Assoc catalog, grommet #11 is called Firewall Plug/Grommet Cigarette Lighter Wire. See attached photo. So, if I understand all of the above information, for a 1950 model, the lighter wire does not pass through the firewall at all and stays under the dash. The grommet on the firewall is not used for anything.

Glad you've got it figured out!

And great detective work on your part!
