Does the clamp bolt go on the top like in the photo OR does it go on the bottom???

It goes on the bottom so it can not be seen unless yo get down low.
I would shorten the bolt.

For looks underneath is better but there is the possibility of catching the bolt on a kerb or similar which could pull the deflector off the pipe where as on top this is less likely. Gene is more likely correct though.

I affixed both my first and second one with the bolt on the bottom. I say first and second because the first one loosened up and fell off on an extended tour. After losing the first one, the second one got a small hidden sheet metal screw through the retainer into the tailpipe to prevent axial movement.

Gene, here is the latest on my exhaust deflector. Not sure how far out the deflector should be. Am I close? Thanks

I realize I am not Gene but I cannot see anything wrong with the positioning.

Hawkeye, may I ask where you made the purchase ?

The one I’m looking for is close to what you have on your pic.

I could not get my pic to post.

I’d put the bolt to the bottom, shorten the bolt, then double nut the bolt to prevent the unit from loosening

Looks nice 👍

Just happened to see this post. Bob, most of my 1950 parts came from swap meets back in the 80" and 90". You know, when there were actual parts for sale - NOT just tires, dollar store junk and cheap tools. If I see one for sale up in the "cloud", (the internet), I'll let you know.
