With the motel already around $175 per day and now the gas $5.00 per gallon, I have cancelled my plans to attend the 60th Anniversary meet. Sorry

RX,

The price of attending is certainly a concern. I understand. How in the world did we get into these awfully high gasoline prices anyway? (Please. No politics. It's against VCCA rules and probably wouldn't do any good to go that route anyway,)

As for me, I'm not going ignore the cost but choose to not worry about it. I'll just bite the bullet and do whatever is necessary to attend. May be my last chance to attend one. Question: Is the next one scheduled for four years from now or five?

I have some swap meet spaces and I'm going to bring some stuff to sell in hopes of dampening the high cost of attending. I could probably do better with selling this stuff on eBay but I like for folks to see and feel what they are getting. dance

I haven't been able to attend one since it was held in Indianapolis back in the early 70s. Bob Wingate sold his black 41 convertible there by having a raffle sheet on the windshield for those who wanted to buy it could place their bid(s). I think it went for $3.4K and was a solid CA car as best I remember. driving

Best,

Sorry you had to cancel. But how many more do you expect to attend? I've been to everyone since Colorado Springs except Downingtown, Pa. Don't know how may more I will be able to.

Well it's 720 miles one way for me,(Dade City Fl to BG) but this will be my first anniversary meet and God knows maybe my only, so me and the wife are going. Screw the high prices we both worked all our lives to enjoy retirement. CorvairEd VCCA#47508 TA#99

Well it's a two day drive (17 hours) from here in NH so that means and additional motel for two nights. Towing a trailer will probably add close to $1000 just for gas so giving serious consideration to going modern and riding at the meet with friends from KY. The modern car will cut the gas bill in half.

$5/gallon is a deal lol. We are pushing $9 Canuck bucks/gallon in parts of Canada.
I solved the short term problem by buying a Harley lol.

Wish I had my car done and enough vacation time to get there. If you can swing it, make it there!

To add on where Tim left off, Gas here (Ontario) is around Can. $2.20 per litre. That would work out to about Can.$8.36 for an American gallon (1 U.S. gallon = 3.8 litres). Then add on the $ exchange rate (at about 30%) and that now puts the American gallon up to about Can.$10.86. That's a fair chunk of money!!!

I went to the AACA Grand National two weeks ago in Virginia Beach and with diesel and tolls it cost me about $1.15 a mile to operate pulling the enclosed trailer. It's all part of the game

Your petrol @ $us5 a gallon is cheap compared to $au1.90 a litre. Gallon is near 4 litres and our $ is about 73c which converts to excess of $8 a gallon. Diesel is was $2.09/litre last I looked.

So by my calculation $ 5 per gallon in the US makes it C$ 6.50. That means it is cheaper to travel in the US so going to Bowling Green is less expensive than if it were in Canada. Makes cents to go to the Meet?

I am sure that Charlie or someone else will point out the error in my thinking.

I also was going through some heavy toll roads with the trailer on the east coast of the US, New Jersey Turnpike, end to end, George Washington Bridge, Throggs Neck Bridge, Delaware Memorial Bridge, Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, My trailer is enclosed and I get the same fuel mileage empty or full, anywhere between 10-13 mpg (diesel) Last time I made this trip with a trailer my operating cost were around seventy-six cents a mile. That was with my old truck that did not get as good MPG, besides the fuel cost going up the tolls have gone up considerably as well

I know it's high but sometimes when we look at the cost, we forget to compare that to what it was going to cost when the original plans were made.
In other words, it was always going to cost something, how much more than originally budgeted will it cost now. It softens the blow a little. I'm going.
Very sorry for those who would like to, but can't go.

I've considered the dilemma triggered by the high cost of attending the BG meet and noted the following:

a. Relative to the difference in prices of different grades of gasoline, generally speaking, it is the best time in history to buy that gas guzzler. (you may have to think about that a bit.)

b. Sadly, It will discourage some from attending who otherwise would have shared their interesting adventures and experiences.

c. We all who attend will surely miss the new friendships that could have been gained from mingling with more people.

d. Relatively speaking, it will hold down the number of 37/38ers who may try to crash the Fleetliner club's afternoon tea parties. You know.Agrin

e. Gasoline and diesel prices may not, as yet, have leveled off. They seem to be steadily increasing as time goes by. We don't know yet what they will be as the time to travel gets nearer.

f. I hope that those who want to attend will find the means to make this trip realized. Generally, less attendees at an event means less fun for everyone. dance:

Best,
