Hi all!

new here and also new to cars in general just picked up a 1925 Chevrolet superior K Coupe that didn't start.

narrowed the issue to the carburetor and that has been replaced

while troubleshooting it i seem to have killed my Starter (Remy 710-C) wondering if there are replacement ones i can get or what other starters are essentially drop in replacements for the car.
Would a 714-L work to gain the extra starting torque or maybe a newer tractor starter with like a delco 10T?

i also am wondering if i rebuild the starter using a 12v rebuild kit for the 710-c/d available on ebay if it would still work on the 6v system?

In my experience a 6v starter will work for a lot of short cranking times on 12v, only cranks a lot faster which reduces the cranking time. But a 12v starter wont crank fast enough on 6v to start the engine, will act like a flat battery.

You might call the folks at The Filling Station and ask them if they know of a rebuilding service that can rebuild your starter. They list rebuilt starters for 38 - up on their web site. You might also ask around locally if there are any rebuilders in your area.

If you take your starter to a local rebuilding shop, make sure to tell them to NOT to remove or paint over the information tag. Don't ask how I know this.

just had my starter rebuilt at local shop
bought the rebuild kit online, but the shop also had the Delco parts to do so.
Armature, Field Coils, Bushings, Springs, etc...

this is the place on eBay, contact them, they have a huge reference to most starters. if they dont have what you want listed, they will let you know if they have it or can get it or

was looking into getting it rebuilt locally and had a quote of $104/hr but couldn't tell me average time to fix one.
while i know nothing about cars i am good with electrical stuff so ended up managing to get the starter running today and seems to work better than before. re-wrapped the field coils and cleaned all the brushes as well as polished the commutator. took some trial and error but all is good now.

A fellow down in the Willamette Valley Region has rebuilt a few 4 cylinder starters using heavier field coils. I think it spins faster and should be more durable. If you send me a pm I can ask him if I can give out his phone number.

I will admit that there is some sticker shock when you hear $104.00 per hour. However, most mechanic shops charge much more. They use computers to diagnose the problem and charge labor time from a flat rate schedule that often allows twice the time it actually takes to make the repair. Most of them would have no idea how to fix a starter or generator.
$104 an hour for someone who has years of experience to learn his trade and make a repair, doesn't seem that bad to me. 2 hours should do it.
I'm glad you were able to sort it out yourself, It is always very satisfying.
