Re:..the covers over the grille bars....I think are chrome..but IF they are stainless has anyone had luck polishing them? They are in pretty good shape but want to enquire before I work on them.

Also the back of bars are black but I'd like to confirm the very top bar is painted black where hood latch attaches. See picture below.

If you take a magnet to the bars you will see they are metal and are chromed. I have seen after market replacement bars in stainless. The bar background (black in your picture) should be Grecian gray, same as bottom of dash. Most guys myself included paint them silver.

I painted mine GM #18 silver and they look great!

What are covers over the grille bars?

The grille bar is not solid. I better explain a little better. The bars are riveted but there is a place where the chrome "cover" is wrapped over the ends of the middle bar.
...just my bad job of explaining.
