According to my wiring diagrams the 1950, 1951 cars used 8 gauge wiring. The biggest wire used in 52 and 53 was10 gauge. I wonder why. Did they decide that the 8 gauge wire was to big and not needed or did they start using better copper and were able to go to a smaller gauge wire.

What wire used 8 gauge? I've never heard that. I see a lot of 12 to 16 gauge.

Chevrolet used 8 Ga.in the '50"s (6 volt) for wiring in the convertible top circuit.
An actual starter motor actuated the hydraulic pump.

In 1949-1951 it was used in the starter motor/solenoid circuit and changed to 10 MM in 1952.

A number of copper items in the eletrical system were reduced in copper content in 1952 looks like wiring was one of them. (due to Korean war)

1952 was the year we began to have slow starter turn-over problems with some engines, wonder if this caused the problem.
