I am re-wiring a 41 Master Deluxe with my sons. The wiring in the dash appears to be very old if not original. How do I remove the gauges? Also what 6v bulbs will fit this? If it is out I plan to change all of the bulbs. Any advice of things I should look out for while pulling it out? Goal is not to remove it but gain better access to the back of it to replace all the wires and bulbs.

Also the lights in the speedometer.

If there is a better way let me know.

I have found that having an old car is a constant project that is never done. I think that is a good thing. Keeps me learning new things. Having two from different eras is just a form of higher education.

You might think about removing the front seat and you have more room to work under the dash.

There are studs on both ends of the gage cluster. Unscrew the nuts and the cluster will slide out. Might be easier if the wires are disconnected first but it's a mess in any case. Pulling the seat may indeed help but it's still an aggravating mess. Is too!

You may want to bite the bullet and order a new wiring harness. There are two prominent sources. One is YnZ out of CA and the other (Some one help me with the name and state. It's in New England. Maybe Rhode Island?). The harnesses are expensive but come with labels and new cloth woven wire, like the original. If you do order the harness, I encourage you to order it all. That is complete set including the clock, heater, defroster and reverse polarity, etc.

See Jayhawker on Youtube. He bought the wires, connectors, end pieces, etc and then made his own harness.

Make sure you label the wires to the cluster. Gas gage and amp gage wires are critical for hot side hookup.

Good luck with it. As for me I'd rather have to kiss my sister.

BTW: Did you ever get that trunk handle to work?

The rear trunk handle works great. It definably pulls the trunk lid tight.

I completely agree that the money spent on a reproduction wiring harness is money well spent.

My experience is that “build you own harness” really comes back to bite you. They never work “quite right” and are almost impossible to troubleshoot.

To do it right you need to buy all the correct terminals, connectors, loom material, and the multiple gauges of wire in multiple colors. Then you need to document your harness unless you exactly follow the factory wiring diagram.

I've had no personal dealings with Narragansett. Never heard of them before. I used YNZ for my harness. A number of people have use Rhoad Island Wire. If you use Narragansett I would like to hear of your experiences with them. Product quality, customer service, pricing, etc. If you do replace the harness be aware that the overall diameter of the wires of the replacement harness will be larger. The conductor gauge should be the same but the modern repop wire puts a layer of woven cloth over regular PVC coated wire to give it the vintage appearance. The only times it's come in to play for me were when dealing with specifically sized holes in through firewall grommets. They size the holes based on the OEM wires which can make it a challenge to get the repop wire through the hole.

I've used Y&Z and Rhoad Island, both are great. Money well spent!
