I used a Fel Pro set in my 1946 also.
Got it from The Filling Station.
I thought the end corks were too wide also.
But then I started the edge toward the outer end of the engine into the groove,
then pushed the cork hard against the edge already in until the inner edge popped into the groove. (wasn't real easy)
Once in, the cork was so solid in there that there was no fear of it dropping out while putting on the pan,
and it held the ends of the side gaskets up really well.
(Take note of what Gene says above.)
In the end I was thinking "Wow, that worked really well. I'm glad they were that wide!"
PS
I should add that the gaskets didn't leak when done either.
