I got a PM from new member willyj. He suggests I contact someone who has items for which I posted a want ad a few weeks ago. It has all the telltale signs of a scam.
Did anyone else get the same type PM.
I thought new members could not communicate via PM.

I just checked and his credentials show up as good, not known as a spammer but there has been some get through the same checks.

Add my name to that list. His profile says he is in Massachusetts so I replied to his PM asking for a name-address-and phone number. needless to say that did not happen. Also checked the VCCA data base by name and number and got no results.

He is a "user" on Chat. He's not shown as a club member. You don't have to be a club member to use Chat. The new user PM restriction is no more. I checked his preferences and he does not have it set to receive notification when he gets a PM and he's not been on site since he contacted you so he has no idea you PM's him. His email is in his profile if you want to contact him. If it doesn't 'feel' right and you don't feel comfortable dealing with him, don't.

I didn't PM him, nor do I plan to do so. It is clear now that he is a scammer.
He joins Chat and, right away, responds to 4 parts wanted ads that he says can be fulfilled by a 3rd party. It stinks from New Mexico to New Hampshire. He should be blocked immediately.

Mike, at this point it stinks a bit but there's no proof he's a scammer. I recently posted a vehicle for sale for a friend who's not registered on Chat with instructions to contact him directly if interested. It does happen legitimately sometimes. Another Mod might ban him at this point but I'll need to see some proof that he's a scammer first. Do your due diligence as always before buying or selling and thanks for the alert so we can be extra careful.

I think this "may be" the same guy, with another name, who tried scamming me not long ago. I went as far as contacting the "3rd" party and it was clear then it was a scam. Maybe we need to tighten up..if you know what I mean!!

The VCCA member number listed in his profile does not show on a member database search. Neither does the email address or the name in his email. Highly questionable with the apparently bogus profile info.

I received 3 PMs from him a few days ago for buy/sell items. Imagine--a brand new member who suggested that I contact a VCCA member that was NOT in the member list. I sent a nasty PM back to him. He has not opened it. Get rid of him!
