I need to replace the back plate on this generator due to a crack in the distributor housing part of the back plate. Back plate also has the oil pump bolted on it. Have the new plate, but cannot see how to remove the old plate. I removed the oil pump, but do not see any bolts holding the plate. I do not want to force it. Do I need to take the armature out? Any help would be great. Thanks
Do you have the generator out of the car? It has been almost 20 years since I rebuilt mine but I believe there are two long bolts that go from the front cover to the rear plate. You need to have it off the engine.

. In the picture of the1923 Sedanette generator, the oil pump appears to be in front. 1926 and newer Chevy generators have 2 long 3/16" bolts holding the back plate on. If you remove the generator commutator cover band (Group 2.299) you might be able to see what holds the back plate (Group 2.297) on. I have not done this myself so it's only a guess. Lou .
I took the long bolts out and it loosen the back plate a bit, but something is still holding it in place. There appears to be a washer with a cap on the shaft. How would this come off to pull the plate off.
I have attached a picture. The old pot metal housing had cracks and is the reason I am changing it. Thanks
