Well,I located a gallon of non hypoid 600W !! Now ready to fill tranny and differential. On the rear end,do I fill to bottom of threads on the differential cover hole located in middle of cover?? Looks pretty close to axle and I have been cautioned about it running down to brakes if over filled !! And the tranny fills up to the bottom of threads on filler hole as well if I understand correctly ?? Thank you all again,Best to all and enjoy the big game Sunday !! Jay

In my trucks, I replaced the outer felt axle seals with neoprene seals just to make sure the grease from the axle bearing and the oil from the differential did not get into the brake area.

I took a seal housing, an old felt seal, and the measurement of the axle diameter to a local bearing house and they were able to hook me up with seals that fit right into the old seal housing with no modifications.

The brake areas have stayed dry and clean for a number of years now. ;-)

Your are correct about the fill level for both the rear axle and transmission. You are also correct that overfilling can create problems.

In the rear axle the oil will flow to the outer bearings as you drive the car and go around turns even with the proper fill level. That is how those bearing get lubricated. If the seals are bad the oil will get out to the brakes.

Overfilling the transmission will cause oil to flow out through the front bearing and get on the clutch. There is no seal on the input shaft. There is a slinger the keeps the oil from going out the front when the car is driven. If you park the car with the front pointing down a very steep slope the oil will flow out of the transmission.

Keep an eye on both levels after you do the refill and have driven the car. If the seal and/or bushing at the front of the torque tube fails oil will flow from the transmission to the rear axle. if the transmission level gets low and the rear axle is overfull, that is probably the issue.

Thank you so much fellas ! Tranny is done ! I left it about 1/4"shy of the threads to allow for some expansion as it was only 30 degrees in the shed when I filled it.I still have access to it if that was not a good thing I can top it off . Jay
