Hello all, new member here. Just wondering there's no oil filter on my 37 MD Coupe, I assume none of these cars of this era have them, correct? I've only had this car for just over 3 yrs and am not real familiar with these cars.
I have a 42 Continental coupe that has the old style steel canister bolted to the head bolts (like the old flathead Ford's). Has anybody installed any of these period filters on there old Chevies?
Does anyone make a filter kit for these cars? I didn't see anything offered from Chevs Of The 40's. Or do you guys just drive your cars with no filter and just keep your oil changed quite regularly? Thank you (I love my stock coupe, one gorgeous car). Hope to use it more this year, don't we all!!

Hi ScottB,

Welcome to VCCA Chat!

Over the years there have been numerous posts about the bypass oil filters that were available as an accessory or aftermarket part for these engines. There are also multiple threads that debate their need and effectiveness.

Very few Chevrolets had oil filters in the 1930s, The ones that did were usually found on cars operated in the DUST BOWL states,
Just change oil once a year and use a modern detergent oil.
An oil filter does not remove the water and gas that gets into the oil, especially on old cars that ae not driven great distances at one time.

Hi Scotty
If you do want to put on an oil filter "just because", or for whatever reason...
and that's absolutely fine because it's your car... :-)
and you'd like to know what filter would have been used back then...
I've found this page to be a great resource:

Hope it helps!

Well thanks you guys you all answered my questions, some interesting reading regarding all the different filters. I guess I will change my oil often (which I do anyway with everything).

. FYI, one of the options was an orange & blue AC oil filter that taps off the Oil Distributor and dumps oil back in the pan. First oil filter in correct location on rear of Manifold on 1938 Ton & half Canopy. Horn or rectifier is located on front of manifold. (I know I have a passenger air filter but couldn't find correct one.) Second photo of AC oil filter on 1937 Ton & half ambulance. Photo #3; Since it's a daily driver, I take oil from oil distributor and route it to the to the rockers so they get clean oil rather than spitting it into the pan. .

They're having issues with the update and how it handles images. They're working on it now.
