Well guys,Gas tank dropped and cleaned, fuel lines all cleaned, oil pan cleaned and ready to go,new battery & plugs cleaned/gapped !! Now on to the carb---Junkyard Dog rebuilt it for me about 6 years ago or so but it sat last 3 years idle....I am thinking the fuel in the bowl is real nasty,so can I just loosen the nut on bottom and let old fuel drain out or should I remove it ? Usually when I remove the bowl on something there is a problem with gasket not wanting to go back in and presents a real headache?? Maybe just spray with carb cleaner a few times and pray?? As usual all help is very much appreciated.

I would remove the bowl and wipe it out. While you're doing that, be sure that the nut which holds the bowl on is clean and free of any varnish or gunk. When a car sits for a long time the fuel in the bowl evaporates and leaves the residue in the bottom of the bowl and in that "nut", which is also used to meter the fuel. Both bowl and nut need to be clean. Clean gently but thoroughly, then reinstall, checking carefully that the rim of the bowl is seated in the carburetor body. Then you should be fine.

All the Best, Chip

In addition to cleaning the bowl and nut I suggest you note the position of the idle mixture screw by counting turns to fully seat it and then removing it with the spring. Take an aerosol carburetor cleaner, WalMart brand is good (but Berryman's is better) and give about 10 small squirts into the port. The idea is to get some of the cleaner down the idle tube to make sure the teensy hole in the bottom is clean. Then a few small squirts in all the other ports and around. Let it dry out and put back together. Occasionally I have to do the cleaning procedure on my carburetors including the one on the engine I use to test run rebuilt carburetors. The bowl gasket should be okay. I have reused a manifold gasket probably 50 times on my test engine without any apparent problems.
