I am having a recurring problem with the doors on my '38 master sedan. After I reassemble the doors and hinges I find that the heads of the hinge nuts are hitting the frame before the door is closed. I have painted all the surfaces with primer but that shouldn't be enough to cause the heads of the nuts to impact the frame.

In the last instance I had to remove the lock washers to get a little more room. I have tried to adjust the way the door hangs but that has had no impact on the hinge nuts. Is this an age problem caused by years of people pushing to hard on the hinge thus causing the frame to deform slightly?

I don't want to make any changes to the shape of the frame without some support.

Thanks, Brian

Brian,

do you mean the bolts that fasten the front door hinge to the pillar?
If I remember correctly the hinge bolts have very thin heads.I would check mine but don t have the car home at the present time. Will be checking on it in a few days ----if you don t get an answer by then.

Yes, the hinge nuts that hold the hinges to the door and frame are hitting their respective frame and door befor the door is closed. In my mind the only way that can happen is if the frame and door have been bent in a direction consistant with someone pushing on the door after it was open. Now that I think about it the worst problem is on a door where the check link had been broken for who knows how long.
