I have too much time on my hands right now. I got to thinking about the spare engine I got wit the 1916 490 I bought 44 years ago. Tried to find part numbers on the various engine parts. No number on flywheel Havent got to block yet but on the top of the head were these numbers,9616 407 P. Do these numbers mean anything? I think the block and crank need repaired. I have a bushel basket of parts. Is this engine worth repairing and rebuilding?

9616 is the casting date September 6th 1916, and the 407 is the head casting number.

The engine serial number is stamped on the mounting face for the exhaust manifold , andyou have to remove the manifold to find it.
The flywheel is stamped around the outer circumference and may need a bit of cleaning to find it.

I sanded the outer circumference of the flywheel and checked it pretty close ,didnt find any number. I did notice the teeth on the flywheel had no wear on them at all. Could this be a replacement flywheel and the number gets stamped on it depending on what car it gets installed on?

I guess I was wrong the other day. Even if the 490 did not have any serial numbers prior to July 1 1917, that does not mean there were no engine numbers on the flywheel and on the cylinder head. Sorry.

No problem. Now I am wondering if the spare engine I have was the original engine for my 490 and whoever restored the car put a different engine in it and if it is a 1916 engine! I will have to see if I can find a number on top of the head on the engine in my 490! It looks original to me. I just checked the number on the head in my 490, it is 121615. What do these numbers mean?
