Tarrytown NY was just one of the assembly plants at that time,

Jack is right. And according to Clymer's Early Chevrolet History (1966) the 490 cars had no Serial number prior to July 1 1917.

The engine number is stamped into the outer circumference of the flywheel, I was reading a note today about flywheel replacement that states to restamp any replacement flywheel fitted with the serial number to keep the vehicle identity,

My 490 did not have a serial number ,I bought it in Pensylvania over 44 years ago and it had a number from the state on the firewall.. They used that number on the title if I remember correctly. I will have to look on my title.

Jack is correct, the serial number was stamped on the flywheel and it also would be on the head behind the exhaust manifold. Chevrolet had been stamping the serial number on the flywheels since the H models also my 1917 490 that was built in August 1916 has the number stamped on the flywheel
