I have a modern 6 volt coil on my 1916 490 and it runs great but I would like to use an origional coil. A number of years ago I bought a Connecuit coil at a swap meet but am not sure if it is correct and it needs repaired. I have an old parts manual but I am not sure if the coil I bought fits the 490 or a Superior. Is there a way to tell the correct one and can someone repair the one I have?

Hello Ron, there is a picture of the Connecticut coil in the 1916- 17-18 490 parts book,
Page 96.
Part number H-599. Model G-O. Two primary leads.
In the 1923 Connecticut parts book a coil is shown with part number type 200-1-Y. Type G-O. , and 200-7-Y. Type G-A.

There is a special ignition switch fitted to the dash of 1916 490 with coil units fitted to operate the switch unit correctly, these can be shorted or open circuit and the switching mechanism may not work correctly without electric rewinding of the coil.
I believe others have used the original Connecticut coil and removed the internals and retro fitted a modern coil.

Thanks, sounds like I will leave it the way it is now with the modern coil since it is working fine.
