I'm new to the forum. This is my first post. I recently acquired a 1955 210 with a 235ci engine and 3 speed manual transmission. It's my understanding this engine has solid lifters and a dipper oil system. The car has 149,000 miles on it. I have no idea if the engine has had any major type of work done on it. The engine is hard to start. It does have an electric fuel pump, but that doesn't make any difference in starting the engine. Once running, it makes more noise than just valves out of adjustment. I pulled the plugs and they were all carboned up. I also did a compression check. Readings were as follows: No. 1 - 130; No. 2 - 130; No. 3 - 121; No. 4 - 120; No. 5 - 120; No. 6 - 130. I am going to do a tune up, rebuild the carb and adjust the valves. I will also investigate the cause of the other noise (I've read it could be a worn rocker arm or bent pushrod). If this engine seems to be in good condition after this work is performed, I am considering making some modifications, such as dual intake and dual 1 barrel carbs and dual exhaust with headers or split manifold. I'm not sure if I should consider doing anything else. Any input from anyone who has done this in the past with this engine would be welcome.

Welcome!

If you have the original engine, you should have a full pressure 235 with NO dippers and hydraulic lifters.
Truck engines however had solid lifters, so look at the engine serial number stamped on the flat area on the block just behind the distributor and you should be able to determine what engine you have.
Your compression numbers sound alright to me!
And the fact that your spark plugs are not oily is a good sign too.

The Canadian 1953 235 had full pressre oiiling etc. for all cars. The US cars with a stick had dippers, ,iron pistons, etc.

Sorry, I thought it was a 1953. Yes, all 1954 and up 235 engines had full pressure oiling and sticks had solid lifters.
The 'mild" moifications you mentioned should make it a fun car.

By 150,000 miles the engine would have been rebuilt or replaced for sure.
