Hi guys, I am new to the forum and this is my first post. I also am new to Chevrolet so your advice will be much appreciated.

I am in Australia and have what I think to be a '36 to '39 Chevrolet sedan chassis. It is the one with the top hat cross section.

I would like to find out how the chassis number sequence worked; as I am looking for full registration of the vehicle. Here in Australia, we need to provide an original chassis number for this process to happen smoothly. The body that I will use will be from a much earlier vehicle and is unlikely to have a number, so that will be of no use.

So what I can see on the chassis, stamped on the side of the right hand side frame rail (looking from the front) is a feint sequence of numbers. They appear to be as follows:

S36 XXXX ( the X's being numbers)

Do any of you guys know if this is the correct sequence and number of characters for an Australian vehicle?

Welcome to Chatter
My 38 has a lightly stamped number similar sequence to yours near where the LHD steering box would come through the chassis just forward of the passengers feet. The number you have posted indicates 1936 model, if you still have the body belonging to that chassis there will be a couple of plates rivetted to the engine side of the firewall in front of the passenger that will decode the month of build and other details. The US and Canadian vehicles were not stamped on the Chassis.

The S36-xxxx. Chassis number is indeed a 1936 chassis number, from Sydney NSW assembly plant in Marrickville,
That number should be sufficient to register the vehicle, there may be a body number as stated, but my experience is they are only interested in Engine numbers, and chassis numbers,

Tony and Jack,

Thanks for your information. This is certainly helpful!. I think I am on the right track now and will enjoy researching more on the history of the vehicle I am building.

Cheers

Jack, I was under the impression the "S" designated the truck size then Dave posted having the same start on a sedan had me curious but you have solved that question. On pre 71 Holdens the build plant letter was the other end of the identifier so my next question is when did they shift the plant identifier??

Hi Dave,
Jack is correct the S in the chassis/ VIN number indicates that the vehicle was assembled in Sydney.
I have a 1934 touring which has a B stamped in the chassis number, this vehicle was assembled in Brisbane.
