You might need a left handed die depending upon which end of the tie rod is damaged.

I suggest a thread file to clean up the threads on the rod. The files work well on external threads and generally have 8 different thread pitches (four on each end). The three files I have can be used on 24 different tpi (threads per inch) threads. Don't need to use them often but have been a GOD send more than once.

I like Chipper’s suggestion. You do not have to worry about the thread direction with those files.

One other trick I use is to make a “thread chasing die” from a nut that fits the threads. I use a small triangular file to cut 3 or 4 tapered grooves through the threads in the nut. Thread it on the male thread with some cutting oil. Turn it about 1/2 turn on and then 1/4 turn back, then 1/2 turn forward and 1/4 turn back. Keep doing this until the grooves get full and the nut is hard to turn. Remove it and clean the grooves. Repeat as necessary.

ChetC,
According to The Chevy parts catalog, the size is 9/16 - 18. It also indicates that the left side would have LH threads.
A new tie rod end is probably cheaper than a die. I have them with both LH and RH threads. Send me a PM or give me a call, if you want. You can find them on eBay or from many of the vendors, as well.
