The 1951 hydraulic lifters probably need removing and clean but for now is there a good additive that I can add to the oil to stop the shatter. They only shatter when cold. When engine warms up, they are quiet., thanks

Back in the 1950's there were good additives for hyd. lifters. Today it is all built-n to the modern oils. If there is a varnish build-up 50 miles at 65 MPH should free them up.....with a good detergent 10W-30 motor oil.

A good 10W-30 detergent oil (virtually all qualify but diesel oils might be a tad better as they have more detergent to suspend the carbon particles) is recommended and the majority of use use it in all our old Chevys.

MMO is 90% kerosene like oil and thins oil considerably. Every lifter problem is different and it MAY be worth a try.

I've had pretty good luck over the years with Chemtool. It's a solvent that you add to the oil a few hundred miles before your next oil change. It's available everywhere.

After thinking this over I doubt if this is a lifter problem. Could be poor oiling to the rocker arms or a pluged-up oil pump screen.

Or some one installed solid lifters.
