I am selling a 1927 Chevrolet Capital AA Touring for the estate of a long-time VCCA member and I am unable to verify the VIN. The VIN on the title is 3751376. The "car number" that is located on the plate under the passenger side of the front seat is 3AA160161. I don't see any tag on the cowl and I don't see any number stamped into the wood floor. The engine is not original. I appreciate any help you can provide!

I recently bought a 27 4 door in Minn. and the papers I got did not match the number on the tag on the right seat riser, and it had a 28 engine so that number did not match. The Iowa dot said I would need to do a bonded title, and they used the number on the tag by the seat. I’m sure that the engine number was the one that was on the papers that I got with the car.

You could affix, with rivets, a metal plate with the engine number somewhere on the frame where it wont show with the hood closed. I have had good luck with that when the HP inspectors don't like nailed on metal plates.

It all depends on the state law and the inspector.

When I registered my '25 Chevrolet Sedan it had a metal plate welded to the passenger side of the cowl under the hood with the ID that should have been on the right side of the front seat. It matched the paperwork so there was no problem. The DMV inspectors have no idea of ID plate locations on these cars that are almost 100 years old. Check the registration number on your paperwork with the engine number on the engine (above oil fill tube) and if it matches you shouldn't have any problem. (3751376 looks like an engine ID number) If it doesn't match then stamp out a piece of metal 1/2' by 3" out of 1/8" steel with the paperwork number and weld it to the cowl.
