How many RPM's and for how long can I turn my 1930 194? I know the oiling system isn't that great, but I would like to go on a trip without getting run over.

max hp is generated at 2600 rpm
i do not run mine that high, i cruise around 35-40 in my 1930 all day with no issue, RPM around 2000.I have read where others have done 50+ MPH but not i, i would NOT be comfortable driving it that fast.
i like to cruise, and i stay off major highways/interstates. cruise side roads. they wanna go fast, they can pass :)

Been a while since I've had my 1929 out, but on really good highway I used to run 50 mph easy, which I think was about 23-2400 rpm. I thought it ran pretty easy at 45, which should have been around 2100 rpm.
The oil system works pretty good as long as you stay away from heavy oils. The oil lines supplying the oil troughs aren't very big. I remember reading that Doug Bell (a very early VCCA member) always ran straight 10W in his 1931 Chev. So did I.

You are correct with 2400 RPM at 50 MPH for a 1929. A 1930 has a 4.11 rear end vs a 3.82 for a 1929. The speed you can run depends more on the condition of the engine ad with a good bottom end either ywar should be able to stand 50 NPH.

It always fascinated me that they had "80" mph on the speedometer. Could any of you imagine going that fast? On top of that, you would somehow have to get it to stop.

i am comfortable up to about 35-40 over that is not fun for me, in the sedan or the truck. not much rubber on the road, and the crazy drivers out there.
i can lock up all four wheels without much trouble. goal is to make sure they all apply the same effort at the same time to keep you straight !!

Lurch's speedo also goes up to 80. Maybe that's what he dreams of. ;-)
Reality = 25 while cruising.

My car is one that Grandpa had and he also sold it as a new car when he was a dealer. It's a 29, he also always stuck to 40mph max. I follow his guidelines and do the same, however when I first took possession of the old girl I did briefly run it up to 50 once. Sure did sound like a whole lot revs for the old gal. I wont run it that hard and stick to gramps rule of thumb. 40mph and let them pass at their convenience.
Don't let a day go by that you don't attempt to learn something new.
