Hi.
How do you guys put on the cork end gaskets on the oil pan? I have assembled a few on the 490 engines but never really with good result.
I have the engine with most parts on and the engine tilted sideways, did not want to remove the head.

I have another question.
As I have the universal ball joint out I think changing the rear packing would be good. There is a cork or felt one between two washers and it seems impossible to get it out. I think it should be changed for an O-ring?

Any tip about this?

YES, if you are referring to the cork in the mushrrom (u-joint housing). you can rip out the cork and put in the o-ring in between the washers. that is what most of us have done. o-ring readily available from all the Old Chevrolet suppliers also part of hte upgraded transmission washer set. in fact on my 1929 my mushroom was missing a washer. so i ended up having one of our suppliers at work mkae me some custom split ring washers to replace them, and then ordered the o-rings. worked GREAT. if you need the o-ring number let me know. or i can look i may have a o-ring laying around from the kits i built.

here is my write up on here about rebuilding my o-ring and housing wink 1929 U-Joint Rebuild

one reason why i love this site and the people here. plus me being a design engineer i do this all day at work, figure out how to solve problems, design parts, and have then fabricated.
