I put in a rebuilt 235 in my 52 Styleline Deluxe. (By rebuilt, I mean bored, new pistons, new cam, crankshaft ground and fitted with new bearings, solid lifters, and head done up to handle modern gasoline) Runs like a champ but gets only about 12 MPG at 60 MPH. Has a Rochester hand choke type carburetor. I cleaned the carburetor and drilled the main jet to the specification for a 235 engine. Runs good, good power but much less mileage than others with the same set up. Any ideas or suggestions?
It is a standard three speed transmission, but I did replace the ring gear and pinion with a power glide set of gears. Installed a 20% ratio adaptor in the speedo cable drive and it reads very close to GPS speed.

Install a proper 235 engine carburetor.

One thing, it will always be happy running on the rich side but. The engine will protest if it is too lean.
My 1951 1 Ton is now on the road! My 38 Master 4 Door is also now on the road .

Hi Ron,
Is this a situation where the gearing is making the engine work harder even though it is running at slower speed?
A lot depends on where the engine is operating along its torque curve. If it is running below the torque peak you have to open the throttle quite a bit when there is any increase in load to make the engine respond.

I don't which carburetor you are using. But you must have the right base plate and gasket. you must have vacuum to close the power piston stay close ( when not needed). yours may stay open and let extra fuel in all the time. ???? what tire size you got?? Stock '54 235, powerglide, 3.55 rear, P275/75/R15 tires, 60mph=2500 rpm. any thing over 2500 rpm gas mileage drop.
