Hi Guys, I am having problems with the starter Bendix in my 29 Chevy. Could anyone please let me know how many teeth the 29 Bendix should have. I have a 10 and a 11 tooth Bendix and I don’t know which one is correct. Thanks Guys, much appreciated

OK Guys, Next question. I have a new 104tooth ring gear (part nr WX-104)and a new 10 tooth Bendix, (part nr 342793A) on my 29 Chevy. My problem, on engaging the starter these two gears don’t seem to match. The engine turns while these gears are making a terrible growling noose, as if badly mis matched. On removal, the Bendix dog seems to have chafe marks on both sides of the teeth, as if they are too fat to mesh with the teeth on the ring. Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

use a gear contact compound/prussian blue and see how they are meshing, coat the bendinx gear, then isntall, spin a time and then remove and look at the contact pattern.
can also take the bendix off the starter, and see how they mesh by hand, make sure them go together, but the gear compound will tell you how they play together in action !!

Hi Guys, I found the problem. The starter shaft has a crack through the woodruff key area, causing it to bend slightly. The bent shaft caused the armature to touch the field coils and cause the horrible noise.
