What is making you think this is a solution? If the radiator or block are partially plugged this will only be a temporary fix.

Can you even find a 6 volt fan that fits?

Hi Rick,

Are you having an overheating problem? Increasing the air going through the radiator might help, but it is not fixing the problem.

Does your AB have the correct radiator shroud? If not, the fan blade on the engine will be very inefficient in pulling air through the radiator because it is so far from the back of the radiator. This shroud is a one year only thingee because the engine compartment was stretched in '28 by 4 inches to start getting ready for the inline 6 engine in '29. The shroud helps fill this extra space.

Here is a photo of a '28 fan shroud: [Linked Image from i160.photobucket.com]

As an aside, what is the best coolant for these unpressurised systems?

Straight water, water-green antifreeze mix, something else?

Thanks.

Tim, here's a thread that eventually gets into a discussion about coolants on the second page. The first page is interesting too. ;-)

Temperature discussion about '27 and '28 cars

Cheers, Dean

Both boys enjoy a 50/50 cocktail of antifreeze and water. Premixed by the gallon at the local car parts bar room.

There are a whole bunch of different types of ethelyne glycol coolants now, not just "old green" and "the new stuff" anymore. Additionally the color does not mean anything. Colors were never standardized, but made more sense when there were only 2 or 3 types. Today, for any out of the ordinary use, you absolutely must read the datasheet.

Recently I had foaming problems leading to boil over with 2 different brands of traditional "green" pre-1995 style coolant. This was in a 36 Pontiac with an open system and a packing-type water pump. I then took a few different types of coolant, mixed 50-50 with distilled water, heated them to 200F, and beat the crap out of them with an egg beater. I intend to make a detailed post about this in the next few days at the AACA forums, and maybe here too if anyone is interested in hearing it.

The short answer is that Valvoline-Zerex G-05 looks like a good bet to minimize foaming in an open system. There are probably some other good ones. Nothing performed as bad as the recently bought "traditional" formulas that prompted me to test this.
