am having a senior moment when looking at ebay they always say they have a standard trans will fit 49-54 which is sorta untrue 49050 are the same and 53-54 are the same but have forgotten 51-52 refresh my memory and tell me what fit what because of the different trans mount location thanks

Good topic. I have three trannys from those years and no two are alike. One has the mount just behind the main case-one has the mount at the very rear and another has dual mounts that would allow it to fit either application. I think the "will fit"' should be followed by "if the mount is matched" . I believe the ratios and control connections do not need to be modified but there are internal differences so not all parts interchange.

I FOUND THAT THE 49-52 TRAN.HAD A PROBLE OF POPPING OUT OF HIGH GEAR,WHAT I DID WAS TO SHIM THE DETENT SPRINGS TO PUT MORE TENSION ON THE BALLS THAT DROP INTO THE MACHINED HOLES.THERE WAS A FIX FROM THE DEALERS THAT CHANGED THE DETENT SPRINGS TO A STIFFER ONE BUT THE S HIMS WORK GREAT,NO PROBLEM SINCE.IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY THEY WERE 3/16 OF AN INCH.THE 54 TRANS IS THE BETTER ONE,HAS NEEDLE BEARINGS INSTEAD OF BUSHINGS AND GEAR TOLORENCE IS CLOSER.
