Pilot Bushing Problem
Rebuild clutch & transmission for 1927 Capital AA with a 1928 engine. first time. Removed old pilot bearing to install new and it appears there was a metal sleeve around the bronze bearing which is still in the crank blind hole along with a bronze spacer at the rear. The opening in the crank measures .775 the removed pilot bushing outside measures .7775. The new pilot bushing, the one I am trying to install measures outside at .815 and inside at .6215. The work has been done with the engine in still in the auto. Do not know if pilot bushings ever had a metal sleeve or jacket. Would like to know the dimensions the original bored hole in the crank. Do not know if I will be able to remove the spacer in the bottom of the hole and the metal sleeve? I could have the bushing turned down but would have to know how many thousand over the existing hole size is required to prevent movement of the bushing. Being of 43 vintage I hope hoping another vintage member will have more insight than myself. I have a picture but do not know if I will be able to download it. Thanks for all that you do…Jim43

Hi,
The original pilot bush dimensions are as follows: O.D. 0.814-5" X 0.625" + or - 0.001" - 0.002"(the clutch input shaft spigot diameter is a nominal 0.625" diameter)I.D. X 0.770" long.It should be made from a porous form of bronze(one commercial name for it is SINTALITE),and not solid phosphor bronze. The original Chev P/No. is: 344098 and it's used from 1925 - 1930 on all models of cars & trucks.

I have a fine thread tap, I think it's 7/8's and I have threaded it in to those thin bushings and when the tap bottoms, you keep turning and the bushing comes right out of the crank. Works like a dream. If the bushing spins, you can use the tap to pull it out.
