I am considering purchasing 1971 C20 pickup truck that has been converted to 4x4. I am not an expert in GM products and am hoping that you someone here can help me out. I am hoping to learn what the differences (other than drive line of course) between the C's and the K's so that i know what to expect and look for when i inspect the vehicle prior to purchase.

Mike will be a great resource to help you in your evaluation.

My experience with modified or converted vehicles has taught me to proceed cautiously. The greatest concern is trying to get enough details so you can service and support the modified or converted parts.

For example in your case, are the 4WD conversion parts all from one donor truck chassis? Or is a collection of parts such as the case transfer from one truck and a front axle from another? Are those a combination that was even available from the factory? Are the drive shafts stock or custom parts?

A major point is trying to understand any electrical system modifications that were made to accommodate the conversion.

I am not saying you should avoid a modified or converted vehicle. Just approach it with an awareness of potential future implications.

In my area a lot of 2x4 to 4x4 mods are total frame swaps. Usually its like a 70's-80's chevy truck or suburban underneath the vintage cab. I considered buying a 51' chevy that was built on a 76' chevy 1 ton. I ended up losing interest because I wanted to get something original.

Your buyer would have to tell you the full history, I imagine its quite rare for someone to fabricate a c10-c20 frame to a K frame.
