There is a 1938 chevy business coupe for sale in my area and I'm thinking it's stupid not to buy it. They are pretty hard to come by. I already have my 36 but everyone know anything in the 30's is slim pickings these days. He said he wont go less than a price I hit him with already, but what i

What would you pay for this? He said he wont go less than a certain price already, but what is the absolute most you would pay for this. . I think if I don't buy it I'd be letting a good one get away. Thinking about buying it just to buy it, and get to it later. Id make it a resto mod

Motor runs but not very well, sounds like it has a small knock but don't really care. Id be throwing in a different motor.

I think Gene is being optimistic. The only things going for that car is that all appears to be there and no outrageous rust-through.

It is a long way from being a safe, reliable, drivable car. And that is not even considering the appearance.

What you pay for that car will be irrelevant compared to the time and money you put into it. It might be a good base for a street rod. But still a lot of time and money.

Can you even turn the engine over by hand?

Ya the motor does start and stay running. It just has a super super light ticking noise. Could be a small knock, but I'm sure all the rockers need to be gapped and it would go away

here in our area(rust belt), the street roders would pony up 5-7K for a relatively rust free 37-39 coupe. it appears most all original interior equipment is present. i recall buying a rust free 39 coupe for 75 bucks, but that was 51 years ago. good luck, mike mccagh

What it's "worth" is the amount of money that both the buyer and seller agree is fair. What I or anyone else would pay is irrelevant. I could tell you what I paid for my 38 in 2003 but that would mean nothing because it's not 2003, not me buying and not the same car.

I dont think your guys opinionated value on this is irrelevant at all.

Some people are price gouging and I hope some people chim in to say dont pay more than .......... price. I would hope someone looks out.

The guy is asking 13,000 on craigslist. Which is highly laughable.

Then says he wont take less than 8000. And I think that is slightly workable

They are rare to find for sale now. It probably could form the basis of a restoration. I live in the rust belt so normally I would expect to see a bad frame etc. But I am guessing that one just has a bad sunburn!

i think the location (Ca.) has a lot of influence on the asking price. The hot rodders there are driving the prices of cars and parts thru the roof. I follow a couple of groups on Facebook and am always amazed at the prices and the fact that what I think is outrageous is seen by many as a bargain. If the car has solid sheet metal with no rust thru and good floors and mounts I think in that area it would bring 7-8 grand. Interior and running gear would have no influence on price .

I see it has Arizona plates so if there is no rust through on the usual places. (opinion based on living in Wisconsin) You will save a ton on not doing rust repair. I think 5K is a fair price. IMHO

Got to love the wet picture.....it always makes them look better.

We, the consumer, have driven the price of these old cars/trucks up by paying stupid money for them without using our brains.
I've purchased and bought many cars, yes even recently, and I'll be the first say say the price of FIXING one up or restoring it has equally went up in price due of the repop stuff.
When we stop paying Barrett Jackson prices for relics the price will go down. There has to be a "value to dollar" unless you have very deep pockets. I simply refuse to pay #2 or #3 prices for vehicles that are really a #4 or #5 and in some cases #6.

Its your pocket book but I'd be hard pressed to shell out more than $4500 for this vehicle. You'll sleep better!

If time is on your side price the cost of putting it in the shape you want it. Start with the simply stuff like grille, bumpers, interior, brakes & tires, paint and body, glass and gaskets and then get serious with the engine and other mechanical stuff.....and be sure to add in several hundred dollars in shipping cost which is going up August 1st.............then check the price of cars you can buy and drive unless you just want to do it yourself, and pay the price.
