Linkage good, shifts into all gears & park with linkage dis-connected. When I try to shift into park the cog on the fire wall won't let the linkage jump onto cradle to lock it in place. If I pry the linkage away from cog on firewall it will jump in. Thanks anyone

Try lbricatng the inner shift tube with WD40. Spray it in to any opening on the mast jacket and peel back the rubber boot where the shift lever goes into the column.

Welcome to Chatter. You will find the information you need on this forum.
Check all linkages for worn joints, a little looseness at each joint adds up to a lot at the other end. You may be able to hide the problem by adjusting the linkage.

Tony and Gene are giving good advice. This is either a problem of wear or dirt accumulation or both.

The solution may be as simple as taking everything apart to clean and lightly lubricate the moving pieces.

One simple test is to disconnect the linkage at the transmission shift arm. How easily does the linkage arm on the transmission move through all positions? How does the column shift linkage operate when it is disconnected from the transmission?

Thanks all, Re: Powerglide; I narrowed it down to the shift tube. Is this hard to replace? Is there a book I can purchase for a step by step instruction. If I need new parts where can I buy? I pulled the steering wheel but got to the steering shaft bearing which would not budge & stopped there short of destroying it (brass housing). Thanks for any info on parts houses.

Thanks Gene, that fixed the prob, shift lever frozen from sitting 30 yrs. What does the screw at the bottom of the mast jacket adjust? screws into shift tube, Neutral safety switch? Also when the mast goes thru the firewall there is some kind of collar the shift arm sticks out of, about 4" long & that has a couple adjustment screws, when loosened you can rotate this collar about 1". Also looking for a new radiator, Rock Auto good place? Thanks again for your help!
George
