Hello all! This is my first post on this forum. We just bought a 1949 Chevy 3100 pickup to restore. Our first restoration project. In getting to know our truck, I researched the numbers stamped on the engine block (3769716) and head (3836848). Apparently the block was manufactured between 1958-62, but the head in 1956. Is this common to have a different manufacturing date for each or did someone replace one?? Thanks guys!!

I don't know but it sounds like both have been replaced.

The date codes between the original OEM block and head are generally within 30 days of each other. As engines and heads were swapped in trucks and cars over the years, the situation you have is not unusual. However, it's generally important to have a head that is more closely matched to the block (date wise) for the proper compression and horsepower.

The 3636948 was used from 1956-1962 so may be original for the block.

t is a 235 engine from a 1960 1/2, 3/4 or 1 ton truck. Same as a 1960 passenger car engine except it does not have hydraulic valve lifters.
