The '28 engines used an alloy piston. Before and after year engines had cast iron. I think you are remembering that 261 cu in pistons can be used with some modifications.

I'm not sure about the US David, but we have a ready supply of repro Chev pistons here in OZ, JP Pistons in Adelaide make them to your bore size, I have a set in my 28 Ute that have done over 100,000 miles, over 20 years, they also make a " High Top "piston that gives you more compression, $1000AU a set, that's rings, pins and pistons, up to 80 thou over size.

Yes, I am using a set of 261 pistons in my current rebuild; the stock 261 piston is a plus 1/16" in our motor as the 261 bore was/is 3 3/4". They are also slightly taller on compression height than the stock piston. You will need to bush down the wrist pin hole in the piston to use the stock 28 pin.
