Anyone suggest a type of springs and shocks I should buy that would give my Bel Air a smoother ride? Open to aftermarket and not sure if GM replacements would be worth it... for aftermarket might be better. Let me know!

I suggest that a low cost and simple first step is a set of good replacement shocks from maybe Monroe or Gabriel.

Most replacement so called performance springs are actually stiffer.

If you expect that car to ride like a 60’s Cadillac you might need to adjust your expectations.

If it has gas charged replacement shocks they are very stiff.
The 1953-1954 had farly soft front ends and do not replace the springs IF they are originals.

New rubber bushings on the front sway bar will also help some.

My springs are original, shocks are a must and since I’m jumping under there I’m thinking about installing new bushings too. I just want the car to ride smooth and my hubcaps not to fall off when I hit a pothole.

It will never be as smooth as a modern car but you shouldn't lose hubcaps.

if hubcaps taking off, check that your rims have the four tits at 90 degree angles.they are designed to retain full size hubcaps. mike mccagh
