Anybody have any info on factory specs for allowable free play in front suspensions--specifically kingpin and control arms??
Inspection time here in the North Woods and few modern mechanics here even know what a king pin is (vs ball joints) and scratch their heads when they see any free play. Obviously if one can wiggle the front wheels when jacked that is a bad sign, but I was wondering what the spec is. The Shop Manual doesn't say.

Chev Nut--I sent you a pm on this.

Thanks

Rick

Years ago they more or less went by "feel" and if there was free movement it was time for replacement.
Make sure the wheel bearings are adjusted tight enough so you don't have play at that point.

Thank you Gene.
Will do.

I know I also have a long standing issue with the third steering idler arm and my suspension guy has the rebuild kit for it and will deal with that when they do the pin work.

Enjoy the summer!
All the best,

Rick

There are no specs and should be no free play or slop.

The 1949 - 53 shop manual has excellent information about replacing all the moving components in the front suspension. It is a great investment to make sure the work is done properly.
