I took my 54 out for a spin yesterday and the speedometer started making a whirring sound and the needle started going all over the place. When I disconnected the cable at the rear of the speedometer I spun the back of the speedometer by hand and discovered the whirring noise was coming from the speedometer and not from the cable. Can I lube the back of the speedometer or is this a case where I have to remove the speedometer from the dash to have it repaired?

Mine (53 210) did the same right out of the blue. I pulled it and sent it for a rebuild. The shop told me the original grease had turned hard and unable to lubricate. It needed a good cleaning and new bushings. When I got it back it's spot on accurate, smooth and quiet. I used Cushman out of Wichita. https://cushmanspeedometer.com/

How hard is it to remove the speedometer?

If you're flexible enough to get under that dash it's not difficult at all.

You might try removing the voltage regulator and the plate it bolts to, it will give you access to the back of the dash.

Thanks, with a bad back I guess I will try the plate under the voltage regulator!
