I’m looking at the top of the pistons from a 1948 216 engine and noticed they are not only marked with the bore number but also a “J”. In some cases the J faces the front of the engine and other cases the rear. When I reassemble, does it make a difference? Apparently the last rebuilder didn’t think so.

If they are the original genuine cast iron pistons there is no front or back.

If I am reading Gene's post correct it does not matter which way the pistons go in but I prefer to have them all with the markings to the front. I also put the bearings with the locating notch (generally not there on poured bearings) away from the thrust side. Tony
