I purchased some spares for my ”˜30 Sedan and included is a complete rear end/differential. For handling and transport is it possible to remove the ”˜propeller shaft housing’ ? How much of job is this ? Any special tools required ? Thanks in advance !

No, but is possible to remove the axles and then remove the entire differential and torque tube assembly from the rear axle housing if you wish. The torque tube cannot be separated from the differential carrier.

Thank you. Was hoping otherwise but we’ll deal with it.

I believe the propeller shaft housing is riveted to the carrier. In theory, remove the rivets and it should come apart. It certainly was not manufactured as one piece so it comes apart somehow.

I believe this is one of those rivets, I think there are 3.

The rivets if removed may allow the tube to be removed however the driveshaft will still be attached to the differential. Removing the axles as noted above and then the differential and tube assembly is in my opinion the easiest and best way to transport and handle without disturbing the gearing adjustment. That allows for much less work for re-assembly.

Bob, you will probably need a rear hub puller to get the drums off the tapered axles. That will be the hardest part of whole job. I can ship you mine if you want. Can pick it up at Hershey.

Thanks to all. I was able to load it “as built” and got it home no problems. I did get a few odd looks from people with the engine in the back... The pictures are before i secured everything - didn’t want the motor coming through the back window !
