I have been working on the exhaust system. I noticed it was missing a keeper/clamp that holds it on, upon removing the intake/exhaust I see it had a broken stud/bolt, I had to drill and re-tap it. So I see that I am missing a keeper/clamp. I looked at the other ones and one of them is cracked. This picture is from chevsofthe40s.com, I just don't know if they are the same size for a 1931 194 engine. Does anyone here have a couple of these parts? Let me know, thanks.
I do have some from various engines and not sure which are correct for the 31 but there are two different ones used. If you let me know the width-length and stud hole size I will check what I have. As you can see from the above photo some have a centered hole and some are offset.
So the '31 is the same as the '29, and '30. I think it might have been the same all the way through '36. It has 4 of the "bridge" type clamps and 2 extra heavy 3/8" washers. The two studs at each end used brass nuts that were about double the length of a standard nut. I use the same nuts on the exhaust pipe flange to avoid it seizing itself to the stud. I usually use neverseize as well to preserve the stud. The Filling Station has at least some of these items if not all.
When i went to remove the manifold the hardware was not tight, looks like the manifold had been slightly sagging. I have been looking at pictures of this engine, the first stud was in the second hole from the front of the engine. I dont think that was correct.
The first and last holes get bolts if I remember correctly, not studs but I could be confusing that with other years. Before putting your manifold back on, at least check it for straightness but highly recommended to send it to be planed at the machine shop especially if yours was loose and run loose.
After I thought more maybe is the second hole in from the end that gets the bolts with the HD washers. Been a while since I had to work on my 31’.
