I have 1937 1/2 ton with a crazy amount of extra movement in the shift lever. Where should I look first. I have a tower kit, but I suspect the problem is in the moving parts of the top/shifter assembly. Can someone help me get started. Thanks.

Hi Mike,

I agree that the tower kit might help some. As you know there are lots of interfaces in even the simplest shift linkages. A little bit of slack in each one really adds up quickly, especially when you look at the leverage ratio of the shift lever itself.

I did remove the shifter rod and cover on my ”˜37 car transmission a few years ago when I was going through things to get it back on the road.

My observation was that most of the slop was between the ball on the lower end of the shifter rod and the opening in what is called the interlock plate. The ball itself had some wear in the contact areas and there was wear in the plate where the ball contacted it. It was not bad enough that I did anything with it at that time.

There was some slack in the parts below that but not very much. My assessment was that those parts get more lubrication than the shifter ball which is up so high.

In the absence of new parts I expect the solution is to build things up with weld and machine them back to size.
