So...I couldn't leave well enough alone. I only have one set of keys seem to be original and was always worried about losing them. I had a new set made by a member on here. The door/ignition key works fine. The trunk lock has always been weird. There is a lot of play in it. The new key is very hard to get the little slot cover to move out of the way when the trunk is unlocked but I can only get the key halfway in. When the trunk is already locked, I can get the new key in pretty easily (all the way) and unlock it...but I can't get the key out. I noticed the tip of my original key is almost worn to a point width-wise (when looking head on), while the new key is very square from the same perspective. Should I try taking a file to it? Any other ideas? Obviously not a life emergency.

I agree that it might help to break/slightly round the edges on the tip of the new key.
My suspicions are that the lock has accumulated enough dust and dirt from the years that the new key is a really tight fit. That accumulation even prevents the cover piece for the slot from moving easily.
My recommendation would be to remove that lock cylinder and take it to a locksmith. He can take it apart and clean and lubricate it. Plus he will get all the tumblers and springs back in the correct position.
I have had only limited luck cleaning lock cylinders with whatever spray elixir someone has recommended. Whatever you use to clean the lock also removes all the lubricant. So then you need to try and relube the lock. It seems like whatever I have used either does not work as a lubricant or immediately attracts dirt and dust.

You have me wondering. Is it normal to be able to remove the key with the trunk unlocked on a 41? On some mid 30s GM trunk locks you have to lock the trunk to remove the key.

Yes, that is the way it is designed to work.

Interesting. So my old key, for some reason, allows me to remove the key while unlocked. I guess we will file the front of the new key and adapt. Thanks for the wealth of knowledge
