I have started up my "38". The motor is new and tight so I start with 12v and run 6v to the coil from a separate battery.
This is fine but it won't start on 6V and I need to be able to drive the car. I am using an old 6v earth strap and a 12v cable to starter.
I am going to get new cables but I don't know what the correct specifications are. I asked the local auto electrician who thought that they were all the same.
Anyone know what I should be using? Also it is a roadster with the battery up on the cowl/firewall.
Thanks
Terry H

At the very least you need good 6-volt cables. You can have these made from welding cable if you can't find good ready made cables.

Hey Terry H,

Check this thread.

There are a few ideas on 6 volt battery cables.

The 12v cable to the starter is most likely the problem, it is way to small to carry the amperage required to operate the starter on 6 volts. You need at least 01 gage and if possible 00 gage cables to make the 6v starter hum! I had a local battery shop make mine for me. I was having start problems with the 52, the + cable appeard to be adequate because of the bulk of the thing. I played with all the other details until I pulled the + cable and stripped the insulation, the cable was all insulation and no cable.

The US convertible/cabriolet/ has the battery mounted under the floor-right side- in front of seat.A right hand drive car or one with a Holden body may be different. The first US Chevrolet to have the firewall mounted battery was the 1940.

You can use the large diameter 6 volt cables for 12 volt but can not use the small 12 volt cables for 6 volt.I would also suggest replacing the earth strap if its old.

There is a 1937 Chevrolet here locally with a Holden Body, and the battery tray is mounted on the firewall. This is the same as Terry from Australia describes on his vehicle. laugh laugh laugh

To my knowledge 36 37 and 38, not sure about 39 in Aus all had the battery under the floor on the right hand side.
My 38 is Holden body with battery under drivers feet just behind brake master cylinder, both battery and brake reseviour are accessed through the same lift up floor section.

Thank you. I am going to upgrade the cables and see how it goes. Ultimately it is new and tight but it starts easily on 12 volts so I will kep on doing that until it loosens up and should start on 6v. The car is mechanically complete but needs painting/trimming etc.
I want it to drive so I can take it out of the garage; I am getting too old to push it by myself and my dear wife doesn't enjoy it either.
