I have the rivets to replace my ring gear and I’m ready to set the rivets. But I see chit chat about it not being the thing to do?
What is the general consensus on the topic?
I have two ways to set the rivets one using an impact hammer gun with a rivet set or two using an arbor press with a rivet set and hammering it as I pull down.
Any imput?

If you have the proper rivets, equipment to set them and know how to use it, there is absolutely no reason not to do it. Even if you use grade 8 bolts and locking fluid it is necessary, they don't fit the holes completely like a properly installed rivet. Just my humble opinion!

You could use 1/2 the total number of rivets as "guide pins" to locate the crown wheel, and use the closest fitting high tensile bolts & nuts to seat the crown wheel against the carrier face.Do half the rivets, remove the nuts & bolts and do the other half of the rivets. The 1st thing to do though, would be to run the carrier assembly between centers in a lathe, making sure the carrier bearing diameters are running true, then check the run-out of the crown wheel mounting face.If it's not running true, then take a light cut off the face so that when the crown wheel is mounted to the carrier,it will run true to its mounting face.
