From new member fourm to here. Doing a complete service before i try to start this car. Trying to remove the water pump (Turns a little bit back and forth), Looked at the manual and it mostly talks about the packing service. Removed the three bolts, tried hitting it with a piece of wood and hammer-nothing, went to a brass punch and hammer-nothing. I dont want to hit it any harder, dont want to break the block, looks like its rusted on there YEAH. Dont know what to try next.
OK trying to figure posting pictures, as you can see them ones were not what i wanted.
Get some of the crud removed and then dose it with penetrating oil and let it sit overnight. I would tap on the outlet horizontal to the block to prevent cracking. You should be able to see the seam at the mounting surface and be able to get behind it with a thin scraper like a putty knife . Welcome to the Chat site and keep us informed on how it works out.
Welcome to Chat :) and i agree with Steve, clean it up and then soak it down with penetrating oil to loosen it up. then us a putty knife, flat blade and work it flat against face of block around the water pump shaft as the section that goes into the block is cylindrical (round).
here is a link to some pictures of the NEW one that i put in my 1929. this is the new ball bearing type Pump.
Hello All, In reference to how many mounting bolts there are for the 1931 Chevy water pump, I think that there are three that are in a triangle pattern. The odd hole is also shown on the gasket ( looking at TFS gasket picture ). I assume that it is there for pressure relief and/or air to bleed out when filling the cooling system. If I'm wrong, that's nothing new.
Ok After cleaning and soaking it all night two taps on the outlet and it came off (3 Bolts hold it on) The pump is shot, the impeller is rusted away. Took off the upper inlet and cleaned it out. While cleaning the upper inlet area i exposed a hole, looks like i got a broken head bolt, stuck my screwdriver in the hole and it appears the bolt is broken right at the threads. Weird thing is it was covered with dried grease, all i can assume is it was running this way.Went to drain the oil and the plug was rounded off. Tried vise grips and a pipe wrench and nothing, welded a bolt to it and got it off. After a couple of hours of cleaning dried grease i was able to see all the bolts that hold the pan on, will tackle that next.
Hello KenMack, Bill Barkers website: '1931chevrolet.com' is highly recommended toward understanding these vehicles. From your pictures, it appears that the caked on dirt and grease has possibly kept the rust to a minimum. However, it may also mean that the inside of the engine may be gummed up with sludge requiring a thorough cleaning by hot tanking the block. Also, all parts and ports involved with the oiling system need attention. By doing a teardown, you'll know what you're working with to keep aggravation and system failure to a minimum. My opinion. Let us know what plans you have for the 31 and maybe some history about the car too.
agree with Bill the NEW Bearing style from The Filling Station is Nice !! i swapped out the one off my 1929 for one. If you want an original style i have an original one sitting on the shelf i would sell off, just need to be rebuilt.
I have two of them but so far have not installed one. I have been running rebuilt originals for so many years with few problems that until I have a problem don't see a compelling reason to do so. With a newly rebuilt engine or one being put back into service after a long delay I plan to use one. Have enough projects that I am sure to use them.
Bought the above mentioned pump, from TFS. Also hose, gaskets, thermostat etc. I need to take the radiator to be serviced. The cap was off and it looks like mice made a home in the top portion. Vacuumed out what I could but I need it professionally serviced.
While laying under the car I see I have a broken front right leaf spring, Is there a place that sells replacements leaf springs for this car?
While cleaning the upper coolant housing I exposed a hole in it. I looked at the TFS website and I didn't see that they sell this part. Did a google search but did not come up with anything. Do the housings from later years fit the 194 engine?
Dave has some and can take care of you, i have a spare i have for my 1929/30 , I have the standard one on the car then the one with the housing thermostat :) one of the few parts that there are some out there, NOS, NORS, etc...

This is one of the reasons I joined the VCCA and this forum. I always wanted this year of Chevy, I figured that the place to start is with the knowledgeable people who build and drive these cars and trucks. I have a 41 Plymouth coupe and getting parts for that seemed near impossible. There are old Mopar/Plymouth forums with tons of information also but parts seem more plentiful for Chevrolet. With the help of you all I'm pretty sure there's no reason I shouldn't get this car back on the road.
