There must be something I don't understand about this feature. I just entered "Gauge repair" and got 200 results, none of which had anything to do with gauge repair.

you need to enter "+gauge +repair" minus the quotes when you enter it into search. Each term must have a "+"

if you search gauge repair it returns all entries that contain the word gauge along with all the entries that contain the word repair, spelled exactly as such, so anywhere the word gauge appears it shows, along with anywhere the word repair appears, ~200 results
if you want to search for an exact phrase use quotes " ", so if you search for "gauge repair" it will look for the exact phrase as spelled and entered, ~32 results
if you want to search for entries that contain multiple words use the plus +, so if you search for +gauge +repair, you will get results that contain both gauge and repair, but not just as a phrase, just in the same entry so could be talking about gauges and repair for a clock, ~200 results

There is another approach I sometimes use when searching for information in VCCA Chat.
I do a Google search on the topic and include VCCA Chat in the search line. Then click on the “More Results” in that first box.
The key is that the search logic of a major search engine like Google is well beyond the capabilities of the one embedded in any forum software.
Not long after I joined the MX-5 Miata.net Forum I posted that I was having difficulty finding information using the embedded search engine. I immediate had 3 replies to simply do a Google search and include the forum name. What a difference!
There are times when this Chat search function does work like I think it should. If I am not getting the results I think I should I shift to Google.
