When you get around to changing the tires, there's a really good article (28Tirechangeinfo.pdf) about this in the Technical Articles off the main VCCA website (https://vcca.org/).
From the home page, go to the Members Only section and choose Technical Articles.
BTW, the main web pages require you to log in. This log in is separate from the Chatter forums. You can register with the same username and password if you want. One of the limitations of the base software for our site is the inability for the Chatter forums to share the same logon in data with the main website.

Got it running but generator in shop so can't drive. Compression was 70 lbs on 2,3,4 but 1 was 20. Noticed tight lash on exhaust so reset. Jumped to 50. I believe if we could put a few miles on it will clean up. Starts well and revs. Have a bunch of stuff from Filling Station getting here Tuesday. Salvaged a tail light license plate of P2. Made new fuel line, cleaned tank. I hear Boyd riding in it.Going out to see. Stephen
Speedo and oil gauge work but out of 3 trucks hope to get one amp gauge going. Huge hairball flew out of bell housing so: Chipper showed me, drop brake arm stuff, exhaust (not there yet), torque tube etc: drop tranny, pull housing and get more foreign stuff out. Should check clutch while there. Upside down! That's me. Phish
Brought 3 radiators and 100 dobbers to radiator shop. Have two correct fans to fix that and brought outer rims and flywheels to blaster. Will see whats left and post. SLH
What did we do today and into the night? Wiped the lipstick off the LP truck! Did get a nice Filling Station box from Santa and began wheel rehabilitation. Will have to remove, clean every brake component. The hub with 10 lug nuts must be off a bigger truck as the keyway is either worn or wider by design creating wheel slop. Having two donors will help here. Axle gasket will need changing and all shoes are down to the brass. Yep, even dobbers in brake shoe cavities. Front shoe material 1.5", rear inner 1.75", rear outer 2". I found a thread here showing the thickness as 3/16". Thanks Stephen
Junk looked good on the web, at least bones are good. Should have vetted but no turning back now. Rear metal wheels have a mystery history. I say the original truck did have 10 lug bolt rear wheels. Passenger side keyway is .380 (appears to be stock) and slot in hub is .480!!!! Slop City so that hub is shot. Driver side hub has 10 bolts but I say that rim was bad and seller found a SIX BOLT RIM. Drilled him some new holes and sold to a dummy in Louisiana. Brakes trashed, spent the day thread chasing brake rod adjusters. It can be fixed thanks to the 2 donor trucks. Will go with 8 bolt hubs on the back as the the slot measures .380 . Stephen
Oh, dont put front brake actuator is vice, breaks babbet around brass adjuster slide. Getting spare off donor and I see them at FS.
Your sloppy hub key slot reminds me of an obsticle I ran into when I was first working on Justin. The left rear wheel would NOT come off.
I couldn't use a regular wheel puller because the previous owner of my '28 AB truck used a sledge hammer to put the wheel on and smashed all the hub cover threads like you wouldn't believe.
He milled the key slot in the axle wider and shoved a piece of hex rod in as a key. Then came the sledge! As a result, both the axle and the hub needed to be replaced.
Anyway, I made up the rig below to get the wheel off. I put spacers in the back so the pressure was close to the hub. I tightened the gear puller a fair amount and then whacked the gear puller bolt with a sledge. After three or four whacks, the wheel popped off with a boing!! ;-)
Perseverance! Dean

That rim looks a LOT better than mine. I do believe you gave me the contact of a gentleman than has a donor with 10 bolt hub. Will be reaching out to him today. My help starts a 7 day break so Boyd will be here for a week. We should hit both LP & HBP1 projects hard. Blasting revieled one flywheel gear bad (P1) and one good (P2) and both clutch forks are good. Heads, radiators and starter/generator still at vendors. Plus my police Monaco Bluesmobile has to get AC finished to ship to Japan. Marathon! Phish
A LOT!! I cleaned and chased threads while Boyd rebuilt stuff. The entire brake rod system was removed, cleaned and reinstalled. The donor trucks give us three of everything. We scored 2 complete working oil/amp gauges, ignition switchs, speedos and choke rods between the 3 trucks. One tripmeter even works. Installed a rebuilt water pump and correct 4 blade fan. I was gripping about the LP truck but it really is not that bad. The goo I had to scrape off the rear brake assembly needs to be sent to NASA. Mars tile adhesion. Rustoholic put me in touch with a gentleman that has the wheels we need as both rears are a mess. Rewire next. Phish
Don't expect your brakes to work with all that grease removed. Your truck has been saving that goo for years and is, no doubt, mad that you have cleaned it up. Even your dog knows this. I can tell by his expression that he tried to talk you out of it and is disgusted that you would not listen. I'm just sayin'
That dog, Marley is one of my daughters. Displaced here since Laura in August. He is very interested in what we do in the shop. I have to watch him as he likes to lick the Mars goo. Actually was chewing on the box 35mike sent. Slow day as rain and cleanup equip stuck. Do better this week. Phish
It's like working on an old house, one thing leads to another repair. After checking and adjusting the rotating assembly we installed a new oil pump, screen and pan. We did find trash in the front main reservoir and cleaned that. Began pulling tranny to change starter ring and found the rear axle was stuck in shackels. Had to drop the whole assembly, cut the bolts that hold housing, clean and lube as designed. Rotates freely now. Flywheel had a bad spot of about 10 teeth and was replaced. Installed new clutch and pressure plate. Repaired door handles, total rewire with new factory harness. Somebody is going to get a nice operating truck. Phish
No pics today but all steering components disassembled, cleaned, greased an reinstalled. New brake liners here so waiting on rivet tool. Had a local member stumble upon the thread and come by after work. Lots of new info and he has parts we need, we have parts he needs. Thanks for the site. Stephen
Engine still had a rattle at idle so off with the pan again. Those front and back cork gaskets are a PAIN!! We had already put #1 rod in spec by pulling shims but front main still had 6 thou clearance. Popped that cap and walla' it had shims. Pulled the calculated amount(all it had) and back together it went. Sounds WAY better and has 10 lbs oil pressure at idle, no rattle. In fact, the sound of that motor is so infectious we have decided to go ALL stock on the P1HB Hillbilly truck which we start on today. As soon as rivet tool gets here, brakes relined and installed, LP is done (after Brassworks does a radiator). We have touched, cleaned and repaired every piece but still butt-ugly. Will be a daily driver for a while. Post Covid we will reenact my Dads 1928 drive from Heberts Landing on the east shore of Calcasieu Lake to the site of Lane Field, San Diego Padres (now a parking lot by the Port). No interstate all back roads. Now that should be a thread. Stephen
Yes, the sound of a good running Chevy 4 is sweet indeed! Especially when idling around 550 rpm or so.
When I take my trucks to car shows and a small crowd is standing by, I take off the rocker cover so folks can see the valves go up and down. Then I tell them that the idle should be around 600 rpm, but of course there is no tachometer.
So, according to the shop manual, you grab one of the rocker arm ends between your thumb and index finger, count how many times it goes up and down for 6 seconds, multiply by 10 and then multiply the result by 2. That final figure is the engine's rpm. ;-)
Good fun! Dean

Building brake shoes and cleaning hubs for grease repack and install. Bowtie in the darndest places. Close to driving, just waiting on another FS order which is in route.
Looks like you are getting it in good shape. The brake linings look great, nice job. Yes there are bow-ties in many places. Discovery is fun and educational. So it accomplishment!
Went 1.8 miles and dry rotted tire blew out. No problem. Parking this project for a while but based on popular demand, we left truck stock. Lemons 24 cop car on the rack, so be off the air for a while. Lemons thread! Team EAUX
phish, That looks like a passenger tire that blew out. It should be a 6.00 or 6.50 X 20. This not related to why it failed but when you replace it, get the proper size.
