Don't laugh at me, remember I bought my car in pieces!

What is this "spring" tab on the service brake shoes for? Does it just "lock" the shoe to the link, so the assembly pivots together instead of the shoe moving independently from the link?

As you suspected those tabs fit over the center brake assembly plate that is bolted to the backing plate. They help keep the shoes aligned with the drums.

I agree with Chipper. Attached are some photos I took of the rear brake hardware assemblies from my ”˜31. I regret not taking more step by step photos as the service literature and illustrations out there are not so good. Leaving many of us scratching our heads. You are not the only one to get a car is pieces. Mine was in wash tubs and bushel baskets that were over 50 years old.
