My plates were painted aluminum and shabby looking so I decided to see what was underneath. I can't find anything but red oxide primer under black paint. Black is the original color of the car. The sill plate is steel by the way and unfinished on the underside. Was there any design or Chevy logo? Illustrations in catalogues show graphic design. How was it in 1940?

Chevs of the 40’s has sets of sill plates. Look at Item # 4102278 40. This is for 1940 Master 85 and Deluxe four door.

The Filling Station part number is GR-282.

I have seen the plates you reference in both catalogues. I am just trying to determine what is authentic. I was curious as to why my plates seem to have no design under the aluminum, black, the red oxide layers of paint. Perhaps the originals were stripped down and then painted? Bottom line- are the COTF and FS plates authentic reports? Thanks for your reply Kennedy10.

When I removed my original corroded sill plates, they were exactly like the ones on Chevs of the 40’s. When I received my new ones, I had to file/adjust them for a good fit. Also, my original sills had slotted screws. They were not phillips head screws. I was able to find my slotted screws on Amazon.

I would guess Chevs of the 40’s and The Filling Station get their sill plates from the same vendor.

I would assume the Master 85 would use the same sill plates since the bodies would be the same?

Curt

I went back and did further investigation. Sanded many spots from front to back, end to end, and could find no designs underneath. There are separate plates offered for the Special Deluxe versus the master Deluxe and the Master85. Both show graphic designs. You'd think some of the original design would be under the paint. Does anybody know about the M85 plates?
