Good evening to all, I'm a new member that has been lurking here for a couple of months and have a question. Ive got a 47 StyleMaster business coupe with 216 engine. Recently added split manifold with glass packs and now have popping noise coming out of one pipe. In process of checking timing to see if this could be the problem. I what to hook up a remote starter button to turn over engine so I can find the buttons for timing. One goes to battery but don't know where to install the other clip. I think it will go to the solenoid on top of the starter but where? I see three connections on top. I'm not an electrician so please give it to me in dummy terms. Any help would be appreciated. Not sure if this is the popping problem, but will start with timing and then check carb. Then maybe on to valves. Seems to be coming from rear exhaust ports. Thanks for any help.

Well if you have a 216 it should have the foot activated starter. If at some time it had a later style starter installed with a solenoid with the battery cable and 2 smaller wires, you will hook your jumper wire to the s terminal which should be the inside terminal, or the one closest to the block. Has it been changed to 12 volts, if so the outside terminal would be the resistor bypass wire.

Yes, it has the foot activated starter. But on top of the starter there is a round canister that has three wires going to it. It is 6 volt neg. ground. I'll get a pic posted later this morning when it warms up some.

I agree with Dens. There is no solenoid for a remote start button on an original ”˜47.

My best guess is that the popping noise is an exhaust system leak, probably between the head and the exhaust manifold.

Were the split manifolds New Old Stock, used, or reproductions?

He is probably looking at a polarity reversing switch. It has three wires.

Yes, must be the polarity reversing switch. Trying to figure out how to post pic.

The split manifolds were bought from stovebolt.com. #5 and #6 cylinder is fed from the rear manifold which exits through the right rear exhaust pipe. The exhaust is popping when idling.

Where do I hook my lead so I can use the remote starter button so I can check timing to see if the exhaust popping is a result of timing being off?

May have been bought "through" stovebolt.com's Swap Meet forums but most definitely not "from" stovebolt.com. Stovebolt.com doesn't sell parts. If you have an original foot starter your remote starter button won't work since the "solenoid" is mechanical. I use a short piece of 1x2 to manually engage the starter from under the hood on my 38 by using it to lever the starter linkage forward. To post images use the Full Editor button below the text box then click on Attachment Manger toward the bottom of the page.

Tiny, thank you for your response. The manifolds were bought from Tom Langdon which I thought was stovebolt.com but maybe I'm mistaken. Never thought about using the starter itself but that makes sense to me.

Click Full Editor. Attachment Manager is toward the bottom of that page.

OK, located timing BB and painted white. Tomorrow I'll see how bad if any timing is off and then go from there. If not timing, the carb. has been rebuilt and I don't think it's that far out. Maybe valve adjustment. I know this is electrical forum and if I cant correct the popping I'll post there. Thanks to all who replied.

It just dawned on me why you can't see the Attachment Manage. It's only available to dues paying members. If you've joined the club and don't have full site privileges you need to contact one of the Moderators and they'll activate it. If you've not joined you might give it some thought. You get far more benefit that the dues costs.
